We hand build high performance custom folding and travel bicycles in Eugene, Oregon.
What inspired you to get into the business you are in today?
When Hanz Scholz went on a European vacation he found travelling with a bicycle was a hassle. When he looked into folding bicycles, he couldn't find a quality bike to fit his needs. So Hanz and his brother Alan founded Bike Friday in 1992 to build hand made high performance custom folding and travel bikes. Former elite racers, the Scholz brothers believe a bike should be built to fit your body size, as well as your individual cycling needs. And, it should be Made in America.
How do you define success for yourself and for your business?
Co-Founder Alan Scholz and General Manager Hanna Scholz, Alan's daughter, want everyone to know the joy and freedom of riding a bicycle. Our company goal is to get as many people on bikes as possible, so we offer touring, road, mountain, commuter, tandem and specialty bikes. Our service and sales teams are dedicated to share their cycling knowledge with anyone. It doesn't matter to us what brand of bike you ride, as long as you ride a bike. If you ride a Bike Friday, that's icing on the cake.
How would you use the FedEx SMB Grant money to make a significant impact on your business and/or on others?
Last year Co-Founder Alan Scholz worked with our local Safe Routes to School organizer Shane MacRhodes to design a new bike that would be a Made in the USA alternative for schools. The bike is named OSATA, which stands for One Size Adjusts to All. It can be adjusted so the same bike can be ridden by someone 4-foot-6 or 6-foot-4. That flexibility makes it perfect for schools. We would use the grant money to enhance our OSATA Safe Routes to School program to help kids learn how to ride safely.
