What inspired you to get into the business you are in today?
An uncle once told me "There's nothing so fulfilling as owning your own business". He was a true entrepreneur owning several small businesses over time. I took what he said to heart. I had always dreamed of owning a coffee shop. After 20 years in the Navy and 13 years in corporate, with my uncle's words ringing in my ear, I took the plunge and purchased the Coffee Phix Café, a community specialty coffee shop. Since purchasing the café, I found in my uncle's words, truth beyond my imagination.
How do you define success for yourself and for your business?
We are a community coffee shop, success for us in other than financial terms is making sure we are meeting the community needs. This includes providing quality service, great coffee, a space that's inviting to our customers. We feature art at our café from local artist each month. We offer entertainment such as Open Mic for our local aspiring performers. We also host community seminars, and participate in events such as Coffee With A Cop.
How would you use the FedEx SMB Grant money to make a significant impact on your business and/or on others?
I believe that our coffee shop is South Euclid's best kept secret. Should we receive the grant money we would use it to get our name out there, to give us more exposure, so that everyone will know what great place it is. We would also make some much needed improvements to shop.
